In North America there are a number of professional sports leagues. Each league has its own championship prize awarded to the top team at the end of the post season. In American football, there is the National Football League that has the NFL playoff schedule once the regular season is complete. The winner of the American Football Conference faces the winner of the National Football Conference in the Super Bowl.
There is only one game to every round in American football. The other professional team sports in North America all compete in a best of series where they play up to five or seven games to determine the winner of the round. With the NFL, you are eliminated automatically if you lose one game in the post-season.
Each team has a chance to get to the playoffs. Within the short season of only sixteen games, it is important that a team try to win as many games and score as many points. The end result of the regular season determines which teams get to advance. The top team in each of the four divisions of the two conferences gets to advance. There are also four wild card places. The next two teams with the highest points from each conference move to the playoffs.
The series is played only on the weekends. Round one and two games are played on both Saturdays and Sundays. With fewer teams left in the playoffs, the final two rounds are played on Sundays.
Regardless of the round, the top seeded team is awarded home-field advantage meaning that the game is played in their home stadium. For the Super Bowl final round, the games are held in a neutral venue that alternates from year-to-year as to which conference gets to host.
The NFL playoff schedule is shorter than most professional sport league championship series. The rounds leading up to the Super Bowl occur over three weeks. There is a weekend break after the Conference Championship and before the Super Bowl title is won.
